Kinetic Modeling and Reaction Engineering for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane

The production of lower olefins has continuously risen over the past decades. Being one of the largest base chemicals, with a world-wide annual production of more than 130 Mt/a in 2010, especially ethylene shows an increasing demand as intermediate. Major products are for example polyethylene, acetaldehyde, ethylene oxide, or vinyl chloride. As an alternative to conventional steam or catalytic cracking processes, oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of ethane is a highly promising route for a selective and economically favorable production of ethylene.

My research project deals with kinetic modeling and reaction engineering of the ODH process over MoVTeNbOx catalysts. A mechanistic investigation of the ODH reaction and competing side reactions is conducted to obtain information on individual microkinetic steps. Subsequently a kinetic model is developed and applied to an overall chemical reactor design. Therefore, multi-scale mass and heat transport phenomena are coupled. Here, special focus is given on multi-component diffusion inside porous media.
