EBSA Solid-State NMR School, 17-20 Nov 2014

Helmholtz-Zentrum München
Ingolstädter Landstr. 1
85764 Neuherberg
Building 35, Room 1050 / 1051

Under the auspices of the Groupement AMPERE

Following the successful tradition of earlier meetings in Germany (2006), Denmark (2008), the Netherlands (2010) and Brno, Czech Republic (2012), the 5th international training school on solid-state NMR will be organized this year at the Helmholtz-Zentrum München in Neuherberg. The course will take place in the time period 16-20 November 2014. Neuherberg is conveniently located close to the international airport of München and is easily reachable by public transportation. On the other hand, Munich is well connected in the national fast-train system. We intend to reserve ample time for social gathering and scientific interactions close to the lecture hall. These settings will allow for close contacts between the school attendees and the speakers during the school.

This school is supported by the European Biophysical Societies' Association (EBSA)

EBSA lecturer: Robert G. Griffin

Sensitivity is an issue in all solid-state NMR experiments. Low sensitivity can be overcome by making use of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) which was pioneered in the group of Robert G. Griffin (MIT, USA). DNP allows in principle to increase the sensitivity of an NMR experiment by up to a factor of 660. This year, Prof. Griffin will be giving the EBSA sponsored lecture "Dynamic Nuclear Polarization: Theory and Application to Rotating Biomolecules".

Program

The school will start on Nov 17 (Monday), 9 am, and close on Nov 20 (Thursday) after the conference dinner.

The following scientisty have agreed to participated in the solid-state NMR school

  • Marc Baldus, Utrecht University, The Netherlands
  • Anja Böckmann, CNRS Lyon, France
  • Frank Engelke, Bruker Biospin, Germany
  • Matthias Ernst, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
  • Robert G. Griffin, MIT, USA
  • Huub de Groot, Leiden, The Netherlands
  • Beat H. Meier, ETH Zurich, Switzerland
  • Niels Chr. Nielsen, Aarhus University, Denmark
  • Hartmut Oschkinat, FMP Berlin, Germany
  • Zdeněk Tošner, Charles University Prague, Czech Republic
  • Roderick E. Wasylishen, University of Alberta, Canada

Topics include, among others, an introduction into the Hamilton Operator formalism and into time dependent Hamiltonians, theory and application of decoupling and recoupling techniques, solid-state NMR pulse schemes, instrumentation and hardware, data processing, chemical shift assignment strategies and methods for the determination of structures in the solid-state, simulation of pulse schemes and line shapes using SIMPSON, principles and applications of Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP), applications of solid-state NMR in microcrystalline systems, quadrupolar nuclei in biological solids, membrane proteins, amyloid fibrils and large soluble protein complexes.
